Under the full name Lee Harold Carmichael, he was born in Jacksonville, Florida, on September 22, 1949. He enrolled at Jacksonville, Florida’s William M. Raines High School, where he participated in the band as a trombone player. He begins by participating on the teams as a quarterback.

After that, he attended Southern University and started participating in triathlons. Later, using his 6’8″ height, he played center on the basketball squad. He switched to wide receiver in football and was named All-Conference as a senior.

He was admitted to the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 1989. He was admitted to the Florida Sports Hall of Fame in 2004. He became a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Hall of Fame in 2012. He became a member of the Black College Football Hall of Fame in 2018. Career in Professionals

He began his professional career in 1971 after becoming the team’s top tight end with twenty receptions after being drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the seventh round.

Following the hiring of the head coach, he enjoyed a breakout year in 1973, averaging 16.7 yards per reception and leading the league in receptions. Carmichael led the team in 1977, catching 46 passes for 665 yards and seven touchdowns. During his NFL career, he was selected to four Pro Bowls.

He caught passes in 127 straight NFL games in 1980, setting an NFL record at the time and assisting the Eagles in winning Super Bowl XV. subsequently the Eagles waived him in 1984. He signed a contract with the Dallas Cowboys on September 6, 1980.

Pro Football Hall of Fame voters chose Carmichael for the NFL 1970s All-Decade Team. Of all NFL receivers, he led from 1973 to 1983. He was admitted to the Eagles Hall of Fame in 1987. He is a member of the 2009 PRFA Hall of Very Good Class, according to the Professional Football Researchers Association. Carmichael was chosen for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2020 on January 15, 2020.

He moved to South Jersey after ending his playing career and worked as a vice president of sales for a travel agency in Philadelphia.
